Who is Jack Frére, really? His mother named him Jacques, his grandmother calls him Giacomo, and his future father-in-law calls him Dottore. Loyal to a fault, he’s spent his life trying to live up to what each of those people think of him. If you gave him a couple of drinks and got him to take off his stethoscope, he’d tell you he idolized his grandfather, a World War 2 hero who put his family first in everything. Jack therefore gets a real kick in the metaphysical ass when he finds Grandpa dead in the wrong woman’s bed.
Like a lot of young doctors, Jack knows a lot about a lot of things. At least, he thinks he does. However, it only takes a few pages for us to start wondering how well Jack knows himself, or how willing he is to allow himself to be known by the people closest to him. Maybe it’s best to just let him speak for himself.
